What is an abortion?

A pregnancy that ends on its own is called spontaneous abortion or miscarriage. An abortion can also be induced, meaning a woman or girl can request the termination of a pregnancy.

Safe abortion is a common health intervention. It is safe when carried out using a method recommended by WHO (World Health Organization), appropriate to the pregnancy duration, and by someone with the necessary skills.

Unsafe abortion poses a serious health risk to women and adolescent girls.

Are abortions frequent?

Yes, abortions occur quite frequently. Every year, between 40 and 50 million women and girls around the world and 8-10 thousand in Moldova request an abortion.

About one in five pregnancies end in miscarriage (often before the woman knows she is pregnant). A similar number, about one in five pregnancies, end in induced abortion. Most abortions - whether spontaneous or induced - occur when the pregnancy is eight weeks gestation or earlier.

Is abortion allowed in Moldova?

In the Republic of Moldova, abortion is permitted by law. Termination of pregnancy at the request of the woman (if desired) is carried out up to 12 weeks of pregnancy and can be carried out both in outpatient and in-hospital conditions. After 12 weeks and up to 21 weeks there is a list of medical and social indications of the Ministry of Healthcare, according to which permission can be obtained for late abortion and it is performed only in hospital conditions. Every woman who carries out the termination of pregnancy has this right, as well as the right to access correct and objective information. She is free to choose her doctor, the method of termination of pregnancy, and anaesthesia based on the information provided during the counselling.

Is there any legal provision for pregnant teenagers?

In the Republic of Moldova, it is a woman's right, including teenage girls, to have access to safe abortion; this is guaranteed by legislation. Adolescents at the age of 16 have the right to terminate a pregnancy at their will up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, only with their own consent. Adolescents younger than 16 need the consent of their parents or legal representatives. If the minor's legal representative cannot be found in the necessary terms, the decision is made in an advisory manner by specialists based on the minor's consent. (see SR Law, 2012). No one can force a girl of any age to terminate a pregnancy against her will.
