Gender-based violence

Introductory part

What is Gender-based violence?

Gender-based violence (GBV) is an umbrella term for any harmful act that is committed against a person's will and is based on socially ascribed (ie gendered) differences between men and women, GBV can also be defined as violence directed against a person because of that person's gender or violence that affects persons of a particular gender disproportionately. It includes acts that cause physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering, threats of such actions, coercion and other deprivation of liberty.

Gender-based violence (GBV) affects people everywhere. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable to GBV, because cultural norms and attitudes towards gender equality disadvantage women around the world. Gender-based violence is particularly prevalent when women and girls migrate.
